Choosing the right KiwiSaver fund can have a major impact on your long-term retirement savings - yet most New Zealanders haven't compared their fund against similar options in years. I've built a free comparison tool using publicly available Morningstar NZ data to help you do exactly that. Our KiwiSaver calculator helps you compare.
What the tool does
The tool lets you compare KiwiSaver funds side by side within the same risk category. Instead of looking at raw returns in isolation, you can view annualised net returns across three timeframes:
- 3-year annualised returns
- 5-year annualised returns
- 10-year annualised returns
The data comes from Morningstar NZ and is updated quarterly, so you're always looking at current information rather than outdated figures.
Why longer-term returns matter more
It's tempting to focus on what a fund returned last quarter or last year. But short-term performance is heavily influenced by market timing and can be misleading. A fund that had a great 12 months might have taken on extra risk to get there - or simply got lucky.
Looking at 3, 5 and 10-year annualised figures gives you a much better picture of consistency, investment approach and how a fund manages downturns over time.
Why funds with similar names can produce very different outcomes
Two "balanced" funds from different providers might sound the same but behave very differently. The variation comes from:
- Active versus passive management styles
- Level of international versus domestic exposure
- Underlying asset allocation (how much in shares vs bonds vs property)
- Fee structures and their drag on net returns
- How the manager responds to market volatility
The comparison tool makes these differences visible at a glance.
Using Morningstar NZ Data
The comparison tool uses publicly available Morningstar NZ KiwiSaver data, which is widely used throughout the investment industry for research and comparison purposes.
The data is updated quarterly so users can monitor changes over time.
Who should use it
This tool is particularly useful if you:
- Haven't reviewed your KiwiSaver fund in the past two years
- Aren't sure whether your fund is performing competitively
- Want to compare providers before switching
- Are thinking about changing your risk level and want to see your options
The tool won't tell you which fund is "right" for you - that depends on your goals, timeframe and risk tolerance. But it gives you the data to have a much more informed conversation.
