Christchurch and Canterbury

KiwiSaver adviser in Christchurch

Cameron Steele is an independent KiwiSaver adviser based in Christchurch. He sits down with you, in person or online, works out whether your KiwiSaver is doing what you actually need it to do, and tells you straight if the answer is that you should leave it alone. The advice costs you nothing.

How you can meet

In person across Canterbury, or online anywhere

In person

Cam meets clients face to face across Christchurch and the wider Canterbury region. A coffee, your kitchen table, your workplace - wherever suits. If you would rather look at real numbers on a screen with someone next to you than read about them, this is the option to pick.

Online

A video call works just as well and is what most clients outside Canterbury choose. Cam shares his screen and runs the projections live, so you see the same numbers you would see sitting across the table. Available anywhere in New Zealand.

Either way it is the same free 30-minute session, and there is no obligation to change anything at the end of it.

The session itself

What actually happens when you meet Cam

No pitch, no pressure, no jargon. Here is the whole thing.

1. Where you are now

What you are in, what it is costing you, what it has done, and when you actually need the money. Most people have never been told which fund they are in, let alone why. If you do not know, that is normal and Cam can look it up with you.

2. What the options look like

Cam compares funds and providers across the whole market, all 29 of them, against your timeframe and your tolerance for a bad year, and runs the projections on screen so you can see the difference a change would actually make.

3. What to do, if anything

Sometimes the answer is a switch, which takes about five minutes to action. Sometimes the answer is that you are already in the right place and should change nothing. Cam will tell you that too, and it happens more often than you would expect.

Who this is for

The people Cam usually sees

  • People saving for a first home in Christchurch. The fund you hold matters enormously when the money is coming out in two or three years rather than thirty. See KiwiSaver for first-home buyers.
  • People who have just bought and stopped thinking about KiwiSaver. The account is usually near empty and the settings were chosen for a deposit, not for retirement. See KiwiSaver after your first home.
  • People approaching or past 65. Turning a balance into income is a genuinely different problem from building one. See using KiwiSaver after 65.
  • Self-employed Cantabrians with no employer contribution and no payroll deduction doing the work for them. See KiwiSaver for the self-employed.
  • Parents opening accounts for their kids. See KiwiSaver for children.
  • Employers and HR managers wanting their team to actually understand the scheme they are paying into. See KiwiSaver for business owners.

If you already know you want to move provider, the Christchurch KiwiSaver transfer page covers how a switch is handled end to end.

Local context

What matters for a first home in Christchurch

The KiwiSaver first home withdrawal rules are national, not regional. You need to have been a KiwiSaver member for at least three years, the property has to be intended as your main home, and you must leave at least $1,000 in the account. You can withdraw your contributions, your employer's contributions, the government contributions and any investment returns.

What is genuinely local is the timeframe. Christchurch has historically been a more accessible market to buy into than Auckland or Wellington, and that changes the planning question in a specific way: a Canterbury buyer is more often three or four years away from a deposit than ten or fifteen. That shorter runway is exactly what makes fund choice urgent rather than academic. Money you need in three years does not belong in the same fund as money you need in thirty, and the cost of getting that wrong shows up right when you need the deposit.

The same logic runs the other way for retirement. If your house is sorted earlier, the working years after that are the ones that do the heavy lifting on your retirement balance, and they are the years most people spend not thinking about KiwiSaver at all. Cam will show you what those years are worth with the projection worked through in front of you.

None of this is a house price forecast and Cam will not give you one. It is about matching the fund to the date you need the money, which is the part you control.

Who you are dealing with

Credentials, registration and how Cam gets paid

Cameron Steele is a financial adviser registered on the Financial Service Providers Register as FSP1010212. He gives advice under Solid Steele Advice Limited, a licensed Financial Advice Provider registered as FSP1010211. Both registrations are public and you can look either of them up yourself. He is a Trusted Adviser with Financial Advice New Zealand, and holds the Kiwi Adviser Network Top Performer 2026 award at Platinum tier.

The advice is free to you. Cam is paid by whichever KiwiSaver provider you choose, out of the fees that provider already charges. It works the same way a mortgage broker does. Your fees do not go up because you used an adviser and your returns are not reduced.

That payment is a conflict of interest, and the honest thing to do with a conflict is name it rather than bury it. Cam can advise on and compare all 29 KiwiSaver providers, including whichever one you are in now. Of those, there are five he recommends and can place you with: Booster, Fisher Funds, Generate, Milford and Pathfinder. That shortlist is his own choice rather than a limit imposed on him, and he could sign with more providers if he thought they earned it. How he is paid, by whom, and what is done to manage the conflict is set out in full in the disclosure statement, which is worth two minutes of your time before any first meeting with any adviser, not just this one. You can compare the five side by side on the KiwiSaver provider comparison page.
